I am not here writing a review on Kemp Smith's famous COMMENTARY TO KANT'S CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON. This has long been universally regarded as one of the most important works on Kant's first critique ever written and on the shortest of short lists of crucial books on Kant (except by the reviewer here who felt qualified to give it an utterly baffling one-star review) and warrants a five-star rating if any book on Kant does.What I propose to review here is the actual, physical copy of the book itself, as published by Forgotten Books (ISBN: 1440086923). The quality of the books published by Forgotten Books varies wildly from one title to another, some close to pristine while others are copies of heavily marked originals or suffer from a failure to produce a readable copy of one or multiple pages. This is one of the better jobs that Forgotten Books has done. The print is darker than most of its productions, while I did not see any blurry or blank pages in flipping through it. There were a couple of pages that reproduced extremely minor marks from the original, but these do not distract from the text. This is one of their better efforts and I can definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to plod through Kant's first masterpiece, which would be many people's choice as the greatest book in the history of philosophy. Kemp Smith's book is not easy to use. The devil is always in the details, and the details in Kant are both elusive and exceedingly difficult to explicate. Some will lack the patience to work through the details (like the absurd one-star reviewer below); but those who are willing to work through it, paragraph through frustrating paragraph, will have an intellectual experience of a lifetime. My first time to read the book was in a one-on-one special studies course with Paul L. Holmer at at Yale. Holmer is best known as a Kierkegaard scholar, but his knowledge of Kant was substantial. We worked through the entire text over the course of a semester and at the end of it I felt like my brain had been enhanced. The CRITIQUE OF PURE REASON is a brain stretcher; you come out of it smarter even if you don't fully understand the text. When I took my one-on-one seminar with Professor Holmer the Kemp Smith translation was the only good translation available. Today we also have the Cambridge translation by Paul Guyer and Allen Wood, which has become the standard, though not necessarily best, translation, as well as an underrated translation by Werner Pluhar in a Hackett edition (there is also an intriguing Penguin edition about which I know little, except that it is a reworking and updating by Marcus Weigelt of the old Max Mueller translation; I could not recommend the Mueller translation, but an updated one? I suspect it is work checking out, but I suspect the other translations are safer). I would recommend for a detail study of Kant using Kemp Smith's commentary to use Kemp Smith's own classic translation, while at the same time reviewing sections that one has completed by reading either the Cambridge translation or Pluhar's. Seeing how a second translation handles the same passages reveals new details in the text.
I am grateful to Forgotten Books for making this classic book available at such a low price. My former hardback copy was destroyed by water and was so damaged that I couldn't even transfer over my notes. Time to create a new set of notes.

A Commentary to Kant Critique of Pure Reason Classic Reprint Norman Kemp Smith 9781440086922 Books Reviews
This is recognized as the best and most thorough of any translation of this particular work of Kant. I also recommend,if you can find, S.Korner, his commentary of the Critique happens to be extremely well written and concise. Both are a must for those whose are Kantian scholars, as well as, the interested in general. The chapters on space and time are excellent.
This is a REPRINT (facsimile) of the second revised and enlarged edition of 1923, except that it's missing the "Appendix C - Kant's Opus Postumus", which has a little under 40 pages, and the preface to the 2nd edition.
The fact that this is a reprint makes the quality of the printing not exceptional, but at the same time it helps a lot with references and quotations, since this is the edition that most comentators refer to.
Overall, for the price and the size of this book, I'm very happy with it.

GREAT REFERENCE WORK. MANY MORE SUCH REFERENCE BOOKS SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND UNIVERSITY POST GRADUATE STUDENTS.
